I've been thinking about this a lot recently following lots of publicity around the 200 year anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade and praying about modern people trafficking issues at our homegroup weekend away. This programme (which I think you can watch online)made me think a lot about some of the demand/supply chains that I am clearly part of. I think this is really important, but I am still trying to work out how best to do something practical about it. Maybe I'll start by only buying these types of chocolate (which I know do not depend on child labour).

The weather....

Well, they say that when Brits have nothing else to talk about they talk about the weather, but this is weird. We've been having great weather in London for the last few days - blue skys and warm sun. But now it seems we're in for a change: the BBC forecast shows snow on Monday!?

In the last week we've booked our tickets to SA - our departure date is 7 Sept. We've also booked the removals firm - all our belongings will be packed up on 23/24 Aug.

I told the partners and directors at work last week; without exception they were all really supportive and want to help any way they can. Its great that they want to help, but also makes me realise just what a good job I have here and whether I'll ever find anything so good in SA... still, it is all in God's hands.

Last night we had the second week of 'New Growth' at church. We were encouraged to choose the Bible verse that has spoken to us the most in our lives, and then use that to write a mission statement that explains who we are on the basis of those verses. Here's my mission statement, any guesses for the verses that it is based on?:
Before I was, before anyone was, Jesus was. He created everything and all that I am and all that I have are his.

Just writing that helps me feel a little less nervous about SA!

...but now I've just decided to start typing a post to get back into the habit again. So what's happening in the life of the Cadmans?

Physically?
We're all generally well. Annie is absolutely worn out from being pregnant (due in just 4 weeks!) and having to look after Jude all day long. Ant's knees are still bust, but I've decided that football is too important to me to just give up, so we'll just have to see how long that one lasts! Jude is full of energy, sometimes seems like he's bouncing off the walls!

Geographically?
We're still in the UK, but we've set a date!! for moving to SA. Second week of September, all things going to plan, we'll fly to SA...one way! Its very exciting, but there's so much to organise - tickets-removals-house rentals-job-visa-medical cert-passports-birth certificate... I could go on, but then I'd start panicking!

Spiritually?
This is probably just an excuse to post one of my favourite songs, but sometimes I feel like James Taylor did...

With the baby on the way and my job being quite hectic we've stopped leading homegroup. Its been quite a wrench for me - I love our group and get so much from our time together, but now seems like the right time to call it a day.
Stepping out and making the decision to up sticks and go to another country is something some of you know all about, but to me its really scary. I'm just glad that we have a big God who takes care of us whatever we do!
Amy gave us a really great verse:

Professionally?
I got promoted just before Christmas - the pay rise will help pay for moving to another country! Consequently I'm really busy, particularly as I'm on secondment to HM Treasury four days a week.

Relationally?
We welcomed Dave Edge to the family recently when he married my sister Nicky. Really great to have a brother in law who was a friend first and loves his football!
We say goodbye to my grandfather on Friday - he passed away at the weekend. He was (and still is) a great influence on my life and a true role model. Miss you Bomber...

Well, since Ants last blog we went to the Wirrel for Nikki and Andys wedding - beautiful - although a little cold, but Nikki seemed not to notice! Good thing too since if she had, she may have suddenly realised she ought to have been blue - not sure that is such a good colour combination with a gorgeous ivory wedding dress.
In terms of new baby news I have been feeling the little mite wriggling and kicking loads, but it/he/she seems to know when Ant is waiting for some movement from it, and it stays very still!!
We are still making plans to move to SOUTH AFRICA, but since it seems to not be working to go through Ants work, we are going to go on a career break - which is a bit scarey, but very very exciting. We plan to be out there by August 2007. This puts our plans to move to a bigger house in London on hold somewhat as it is probably going to be easier to rent out our current house because of its location.

I can't believe its nearly a month since we last posted anything - work has been manic and I've been out of town quite a lot. Here's a collection of places I've been visiting instead of this blog:
- the Science museum: a great place to entertain Jude; lots of time spent playing with water in the 'garden'
- Latimer: a work thing, but nice location (if somewhat remote)
- Coventry: more specifically, Aunty Linda and Uncle George's house. I had to go to Stoneleigh for work, so we all decided to pay a visit.
- Slaley Hall: another work thing, another nice location (even more remote!)

Time to spend a bit more time in London I think!

Center Parcs

We just got back from a great extended weekend away at Center Parcs in Elveden Forest (I thought they just made the name up, but to my surprise, there's actually a real place with this Lord of the Rings name!). I've updated the Flickr badge on the right so you can see some of our photos. The place caters so well for families with kids. My personal highlight was actually putting Jude into the Bumblebees nursery for 3 hours whilst Annie and I went to the Aqua Sana and sampled the various saunas and spa facilities!
Needless to say the whole break was over far too quickly, but we had a really great time and would recommend it to anyone!

As always the week just went too quickly, but we had a great time. We were in the Peak District staying in a cottage on the edge of Carsington Water with a great bunch of friends. The week involved a lot of relaxing, playing with Jude and enjoying the scenery! I have updated the Flickr badge on the right with some of our photos from the holiday. Last week I was amazed to learn that I had 4 extra days holiday that need to be taken by the end of September - its a hard life! Unfortunately my work diary is rather crowded and i had limited days free to take. This week I have taken Monday off and take tomorrow off as well. A 3 day week is great, except when you have at least 5 days work to get done before our holiday in the Peak District next week...after the past 3 days I'm in need of that holiday!

I was reprimanded by Diana recently for not posting often enough on our blog. For this I apologise, and will try to do better!
This week has been very exiting as the 'God Loves Peckham' mission has been running since Monday. For all the details you can check Frog's blog. I could only take one day off from work, so didn't really get involved until Wednesday evening when I went to the event on Peckham Square. Highlights for me were Four Kornerz and packing away the stage in the rain! My day off was yesterday - spent the morning worshiping and prayer-walking and the afternoon playing football with a bunch of guys from the Pelican Estate, I think there was appreciation on both sides for the time spent and quality of football played! Met some great people from Ambassadors in Sport. Annie has been very involved with the parents and toddlers groups each morning, and last night was a beauty consultant at the 'Pink and fluffy night'!
Looking forward to tomorrow - going to go to football training for the first time in ages - hope the knees hold up (they feel fine after the footie at Pelican), then there's the final event of God Loves Peckham on the Square.

The World Cup has started and, as long as you forget the opening ceremony, what a great start! Germany 4-2 Costa Rica - great attacking football; and currently Ecuador are 1-0 up against Poland!. Another bank holiday

Well, that's the last bank holiday for a while - good thing we managed to enjoy ourselves! The highlight was a trip to the Globe theatre to see Coriolanus - it really is like stepping back in time! We think this performance beats King Lear, which we saw last time we went.

As well as the theatre, we spent lots of time out and about with friends - we saw our old uni friends for the first time in over a year, needless to say Jude has grown a bit since they last saw him! Well, its half time in England v Hungary so I'd better get back to the match (although its not exactly riveting at the moment...)

Bank holiday...again!

I always feel like I only work part-time at this time of year - so many bank holidays, so many four day weeks - it's great. We spent most of the weekend with friends - football, church, lunch, drinks, DVD etc and were so tired that we decided to use today for a rest! We thought it was going to rain, but the weather cleared up so we ended up in Decathlon where we bought a bike seat and helmet for Jude:

We took a ride around Peckham, with Annie on her skates - Jude seemed to enjoy himself, we certainly did!

Jude is really getting the hang of sign language. We are using 'Sign with your baby' - it actually works! He now knows the signs for eat, drink, shoes, aeroplane, book, car, bath, ball, up and down - it makes life a lot easier for him and us!

Easter break and our anniversary

It was our 6th wedding anniversary last Saturday and we haven't posted in a while, so here's a quick rundown of 6 of the fun things we did over the 4 day Easter break:
- went to see Stomp in the West End on Thurs (so much fun!)
- went for a walk around Ightham Mote on Friday
- went out for lunch at Petitou on Saturday
- had dinner at Ganapati (great local Indian restaurant), also on Saturday (yes, we were full by the end of the day!)
- had an Easter dinner with family on Sunday
- went to Greenwich park on Monday

The Grand National

This weekend the Grand National took place. To make watching the race more interesting, we decided to place a bet on three horses, one for each of us. We bet on the following horses:
Ant - Clan Royal - placed 3rd
Jude - Numbersixvalverde - won (!)
Annie - Garvivonnian - pulled up at fence 17.
What a result! We only bet 50p stakes, but with high odds on Jude's horse won around £7. In my opinion, it just goes to show that gambling does pay...(at least for a couple of take-away fish and chips).

The truth, the whole truth and nothing but...

Today we had to appear in Camberwell magistrates court as witnesses to an act of vandalism last October! The trial had already been delayed once (we went to court in November last year, but were never called into the court) and it is very difficult to remember events from 5 months ago! What impressed me most was the standard of the witness area - comfortable sofas, kitchen, magazines, toys for Jude etc. - which we were very grateful for as we had to wait 5 hours before being called!! Eventually it was decided that only one of Annie and I had to give evidence in court as our statements were very similar. I decided to do it and was glad I did (I think Annie was too!) - it was really interesting to be cross examined; I was amazed at how the solicitor tried to manipulate what I said. We don't know the outcome yet, but I expect that the defendent will be convicted given the looks on the magistrates' faces. Turns out he's also up for GBH or something similar - the vandalism (smashing a car window) was just what happened afterwards...

A satisfying Saturday

Yesterday was a good day. We started by having a full English breakfast with friends at a greasy spoon on Peckham High Street; I'm thinking about sending in a review to Russell Davies. That set us up for the day, so we went straight on to 'Pets at Home' to buy some new fish for the severly depleted tank.
We ended up going for some Black Neon Tetra and some new plants; we'll wait to see how these guys get on before getting any more! In the afternoon, the boys went to soft play at Peckham Pulse and Annie got the chance for a civilised coffee out with a friend. We watched the rugby (and cursed the luck of the Irish!), but things improved later in the evening when a whole bunch of friends turned up to watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - a really great film!

Arctic Monkeys in Peckham?

A friend told me that the Arctic Monkeys were recording a video here in Peckham outside her house on Ledbury Street. Sure enough, when I went round there this evening, there were lights, cameras, and best of all a drumkit set up in the Ledbury Estate. No confirmation that it was definitely the AM's, but fun to see nonetheless!

South Africa or bust?

It may well be a case of South Africa and bust the way things are shaping up at the moment. For a while now we've been aiming to get to South Africa in early 2007 - Cape Town to be specific. The plan has been for me to get a secondment with work, the easiest (or so we thought) way to get to, and work in, SA for a while. The London office have been great, really helpful in trying to arrange the secondment, but it just seems as though the Cape Town office has no capacity for new staff. So, the debate: try harder, wait a while or resign and look for other work in Cape Town?? As yet no answer to that question (so I guess its an implied wait then!), but we can't wait indefinitely; we still all feel that SA is the right direction to go in.

Well, this weekend has gone past very quickly. Annie has tonsilitis, which has knocked her out completely. Jude and I helped friends move house on Saturday, then Uncle Andy, Aunty Nicky and her boyfriend Dave came over in the afternoon. Andy brought back presents from Australia, including a t-shirt for Jude which reads 'If you think I'm cute you should see my uncle' - I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions on that; here's the last photo I have of them together...

The truth about the cardigan

Well, it looks like you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet. I have been reliably informed by none other than Nana herself, that the jacket worn by Jude (see post below 28 February) was not only worn by his dad (and uncle and aunt) but was originally his nana's and is about 53 years old!! It was bought for her by grandnan & bomber when they went to Norway. So, the trendsetters are revealed - here they are:

So, when we were in South Africa we went to Capetown - all three of us are hopeful that we will be living there next year! While we were there we saw Marcelle and Gordon - Judes Godparents. We also spent a lot of time by the sea! We usually went to FishHoek or Camps bay beach. FishHoek is on the warm (Indian Ocean) side of South Africa, so at times the water is air temperature. Jude also seemed to enjoy the beach, especially eating sand!

Trip to Brighton

Today we went to Brighton for Catie's 30th birthday - I told her that 30 was a good age as its the product of two consecutive numbers (5 x 6)!? Note to self: never try to find parking in central Brighton in the middle of a Saturday ever again [it took over an hour to park]. It was a beautiful day - clear blue skys but very cold. We had time to browse the shops in the 'Lanes'. Here's a link to some pics.

When we were in SA we had a pre birthday celebration for Jude!

Emily, Toby, Jasmine, Alex, their mums and dads and of course Jude came around for his little baby birthday celebration in England. These things are always more for the adults arnt they?! He seemed to enjoy it though! We played pass the parcel and Jude stole Tobys prize away from him!
